In this house, the boys learn to cook and clean on top of the regular “man jobs” and the girls learn how to do the “woman jobs” and how to cook and clean. Life is not always sunshine and rainbows. We are all very aware how marriages don’t always work out. I tell our oldest all the time that he very well may not be able to move out from our house and in with a woman who wants to take care of him! A bonus mom can pray though! Anyways, He is preached to all the time that his mother and I are makng sure he knows how to clean and cook becuase he needs to be able to take care of himself! When he is a husband and a father, he needs to be able to be an equal partner to his wife. He needs to be able to step in and cook dinner for his family if she needs the help.

Why Teach Your Son to Cook?
Cooking is a crucial skill that transcends gender roles and is essential for anyone wanting to lead a healthy, independent, and responsible life. Here are a few compelling reasons to get your sons involved in the kitchen from a young age:
1. Promoting Independence and Self-Sufficiency
Teaching boys to cook helps them become independent by equipping them with the skills to nourish themselves without relying on pre-packaged meals or takeout. This fosters self-reliance and confidence as they learn to manage their dietary needs. For a homemade cook like me, thinking of thier freezers filled with freezer meals gives me chills!
2. Developing Life Skills
Cooking involves a range of tasks that can help develop organizational skills, time management, problem-solving, creativity, and patience. These are invaluable skills that apply well beyond the kitchen. Let’s not forget math! Our oldest loves finishing his math work just for me to ask him cooking math questions LOL!
3. Understanding Nutrition and Health
By learning to cook, your son will have a better understanding of nutrition, which can encourage healthier eating habits for him and his family. This knowledge helps them make informed choices about their diet and health.
4. Strengthening Family Bonds
Cooking together can be a bonding activity that strengthens relationships. It offers an opportunity for meaningful conversations and can help boys feel more connected to their family heritage and traditions. Having the boys cook with me is my absolute favorite time of day! Some of my favorite pictures of them are in the kitchen!
5. Preparing for Future Roles
Whether as partners or parents, men who can cook are prepared to share household responsibilities fairly. Cooking is a way to care for and nurture others, valuable traits in any substantial relationship. I do not get worried at all about getting sick or hurt and the house falling apart. My husband always steps right in and takes care of what I ask when I am truly down. As a wife and a mother, we all know the relief we get when we know the house will be taken care of!

Getting Started: Tips for Teaching Young Cooks
Start Simple: Begin with easy recipes that don’t require dangerous tools or complex techniques.
Make It Fun: Use cooking as an opportunity to have fun. Try recipes that might be a bit messy or allow for creative expression.
Focus on Life Lessons: Use the time to instill values about nutrition, hard work, and the importance of cleaning up afterward.
Be Patient: Remember that mistakes are part of learning. Be encouraging rather than critical to keep the experience positive.
Include them: when you have an easier night, let them help! It may add 5 minutes to your day BUT they love to help. Simple things like stirring a pot so it doesn’t stick and you can make the salad. Have them cut potatoes for you! Little things go a long way and they learn a lot simply being with you.
Here are two simple, engaging recipes that are perfect for young chefs to begin with. They cover basic cooking techniques and offer delicious results that will motivate your son to keep cooking.
